MEDIA MONITOR - BUSINESS MAGAZINES, TWIN CITIES METRO

MEDIA MONITOR - BUSINESS MAGAZINES, TWIN CITIES METRO

Do you get these publications? Have they been getting thinner each issue? With a nod to Media Week's Magazine Monitor feature we thought it might be helpful to see a comparison of these local business magazine's.

Listed by cost of a full page, four-color, 1x advertising page rate:

$3,555 - Upsize

FROM THEIR MATERIALS:

Upsize Minnesota is a magazine devoted to helping small-business owners build bigger and more profitable companies. Readers are owners, managers and investors of small to mid-sized businesses who actively seek smart ways to grow.

Small businesses, those with fewer than 100 employees, make up more than 95 percent of all companies in the United States and employ about half the private workforce. Upsize aims to connect those owners with practical information, real-life inspiration and local resources, in a lively format that's a pleasure to receive and read.

OUR TAKE:

Many first-person articles by business owners. At times hard to see the difference between self-promotion and selflessly shared knowledge. No audited circulation numbers. Based on ad page counts not sure how their model works as a stand alone.

$4,000 - Minnesota Business Magazine

FROM THEIR MATERIALS:

Our readers are leaders.
We deliver the highest percentage of business leaders and top managers in this market
Our readers have an average of 120 employees and annual revenues of $55.9 million
We reach the top leadership of Minnesota’s small and emerging growth companies

OUR TAKE:

Usually one or two writers produce the entire magazine's editorial materials. Smartly designed, feels valuable. But has very few ad pages and no audited circulation numbers. Probably depends on the overall success of TigerOak (it's owner) to survive.

$7,270 - Twin Cities Business Magazine

FROM THEIR MATERIALS:

Twin Cities Business reaches:
100% of all Minnesota-based Fortune 500 companies
92% of Minnesota public companies with 50 or more employees
90% of Minnesota private companies with 50 or more employees
88% of all businesses in Minnesota with 50 or more employees
82% of all businesses in Greater Minnesota with 50 or more employees

31,273 audited monthly circulation

OUR TAKE:

A beefy book of a magazine. Looks to have withstood the economic and industry issues. Still, a smaller subscriber base (in the 15,000 range) than you might expect based on the ad page cost. Can be a daunting read and could use a stronger design discipline. Strong writing.
